Obituary
Peggy Ann Gallagher, 81, of Hazle Township, passed away at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown. Born in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late James C. Gallagher, a shovel operator, and Margaret "Peg" Ward Gallagher, a schoolteacher.
Peggy was a devoted member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, where she faithfully served as a lector for many years.
A dedicated educator, Peg taught in the Hazleton Area School District for 33 years. During her distinguished career, she taught first, second, and third grades at Poplar Street Elementary School, D.A. Harman Elementary School, and Hazle Elementary School. Her commitment to education positively influenced the lives of countless students and families throughout the community.
Peggy graduated from the University of Misericordia as a scholarship student, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She later received her master's degree from Bloomsburg University. Committed to lifelong learning, she continued her studies at the University of Scranton, Penn State University, and Wilkes University, earning an additional 78 academic credits.
Peg loved to travel and did so extensively throughout her life. She was an avid reader and an active member of several book clubs. She also enjoyed playing canasta and bowling, participating in the Valley Country Club's canasta team and bowling league.
Peggy was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 34 years. Achieving and maintaining her sobriety was what she considered her greatest accomplishment, and she served as an inspiring example of strength, perseverance, and hope to others.
She is survived by many dear friends whom she loved deeply. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Pius of Pietrelcina Parish at St. Gabriel's Church, where Peggy received all of her sacraments, on Thursday, August 13th, at 10 A.M. Burial will follow in St. Gabriel's Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday morning in the church from 9-10 A.M.
