Michael G. Oleyar, Sr., formerly of Freeland, passed away on March 7, 2019 at Mountain City Nursing Home.  He was born on July 26, 1939, and was the son of the late Frank and Seraphine (Bonomo) Oleyar.  Mike was a graduate of MMI Preparatory School, and was a member of the US Army Reserves.

He was a charismatic entrepreneur who, along with his former wife, Marie, owed and operated the Little Foreign Car Shop in Freeland where they sold MGB, Jaguar, Subaru, and Harley Davidsons.

Mike’s love of cars and speed led him to the race track.  He started his racing career with local hill climbs such as the Weatherly Hill Climb and Giant’s Despair in Luzerne County.  He enjoyed ice racing on Lake Naomi.  He raced corvettes at Watkins Glen, NY, and The 24-Hour at Daytona Beach, Fl.   He continued road racing with the IMSA and Trans Am racing circuits across the United States and Canada.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his sister, Mary DeFant.

He is survived by his son, Michael, Jr., his wife Kristen, and their children Marshall and Sofia, Drums; daughter, Mollie, and her companion, Larry Hoffman, Hazleton; and his sister, Joan Oleyar.

Friends can pay their respects on Friday, March 15th, from 6-8 PM at the Joseph A. Moran Funeral Home, 229 W. 12th St., Hazleton.  A private burial will be held by the family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Freeland YMCA, in Mike’s memory, are greatly appreciated.
