Michael Empetro Jr.

Michael J. Empetro Jr., 94, of Weatherly, passed away peacefully on Tuesday at the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.  Born in Centralia, he was the son of the late Michael and Genevieve (Polidore) Empetro Sr.

He was a United States Marine Veteran during WWII and served in the battle Iwo Jima.  He participated in the Marshall Island, Saipan, and Tinian battles and was awarded a bronze star in Iwo Jimo.  He was also awarded two Presidential Citations for bravery in battle.  He was also a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League.  Before retiring he was a mechanic at Bemis.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his wife the former Mary Reinmiller; sisters Agnes Rimshaw, Jenny Pfeiffer, and Philomena Williams.

Surviving are his nephew Ralph Williams and his wife Lorraine, Hazleton; nieces Judy Thomas, Weatherly, Cathy Frierson, NC, and Barbara Campbell, NC; cousin Francis Goncalves and his wife Mary and his son Joseph and daughter Denise; and several other grandnieces, grandnephews, great grand niece and nephews, and cousins.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, May 12th, at 10:30 A.M. in Most Precious Blood Church, Hazleton.  Burial will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Weatherly, at the convenience of the family.  Friends may call at the Joseph A. Moran Funeral Home, 229 W. 12th St., Hazleton, on Saturday morning from 9-10 A.M.
